BLANK BEAUTY

July 23, 2008 | Filed Under god bless the internet | 1 Comment

I came across this post on Salon’s Machinist blog about WriteRoom - a super simplified word processor app that essentially hides everything except the text you’re typing.  You type in full-screen on a completely blank background.  Absolutely no distractions.  Just the “paper” and the text.

When I fired up the demo version, I immediately “got it”… it’s the same feeling you get when you load a blank sheet into a typewriter.  It just asks to be typed into.  I’m not totally sure exactly why this strikes such a chord with me; it’s one of those things that’s hard to put your finger on…  It just feels completely different than typing in any of the “normal” computer ways we’re used to.  The tools, (at least the important ones), are all there, they’re just hidden until you want them.  You can also change the background color, the font, and even the cursor (you can use retro blinking boxes, a non-blinking line, etc).  Right now, I have mine set to a white background with the “american typewriter” font just to amplify the illusion, (but I’m not settled on it yet).  The point is, this program is all about creating the perfect “space” to write in - which is something that most word processors seem to have pretty low on the priority list, and which most creative writers would probably appreciate.  It’s 25 bucks, which seems a little crazy high, but I think it’s definitely worth checking out if you happen to be the type-writin’ writin’ type.

DIVERSIFY YOUR PORTFOLIO

I have no idea how long this will last - but according to the Cast and Crew section on the New York Times website, I have an incredibly diverse resume.

I’m pretty sure this happened when they data-mined my IMDB page and then didn’t input it correctly into their own system - all of these movies’ credits seem to be about half real and half House of Payne episodes.

In any case - it’s pretty amusing - -  “Tyler Perry’s Dracula Sucks” anyone?

The only real one on this list is One Missed Call - I really did work on that flick.

POSTCARD TRICK

April 21, 2008 | Filed Under funny haha, god bless the internet, mysterious | Leave a Comment

a brilliant ebay-auction prank concept:

You are bidding on a rare chance to traumatize a treasured friend or relative with baffling, mind-numbing, mystery correspondence from abroad.

During the course of my holiday I will send three postcards to one person of your choosing.

These postcards will be rant-ravingly insane, yet they will be peppered withunmistakable personal details about the addressee. Details you will provide me.

The postcards will not be coherently signed, leaving your mark confused, guessing wildly, crying out in anguish.

and success!

the post-prank analysis, with scans.

GIANT LILY

i saw some of these at the san francisco botanical garden, but they weren’t nearly as fast.

they make me think of something you’d have to use as a platform in a video game… you’d
have to jump off real quick before it sinks ((or before the flowers getcha)).

anyway - jokes aside, this time-lapse film is pretty terrif.
